Beef + Sweet Potato Baby Food Puree with Thyme
This Beef and Sweet Potato Baby Puree is comfort food in a bowl – for your baby! Tender, creamy, and savory, your little one will love this delicious puree for lunch or dinner. Stage 2 baby food!
Beef & Sweet Potato Baby Puree
Looking for a savory meal for your baby?
Then, I’ve got you!
Beef puree can have a lot of flavor, and while some babies love the boldness of it, others don’t. My littlest one was struggling with eating beef puree, so I decided to add in some creamy sweet potatoes and a pinch of thyme. It was an instant success! She ate her entire serving of this puree and then demanded more (in baby sign language, of course).
Ingredients
- Beef: for this recipe, we are going to use cubed sirloin beef
- Sweet Potato: peeled and roughly chopped
- Thyme: I love to add in a pinch of fresh thyme but you can also add in rosemary or chives or omit altogether.
Let’s get cooking, shall we?
Chunks of good-quality beef are simmered in beef broth with sweet potato chunks and a pinch of thyme until the beef is just done. Again, you do not want to overcook the beef. That will make it hard, flavorless, and result in a bland and boring puree. We don’t want that, now do we? Plus, it makes this puree a quick and easy puree you can whip up any night you are short on time, which would be every night in our house!
This puree is like comfort in a bowl!
Tender and creamy, this savory puree will tempt your little ones’ taste buds with flavorful beef and pungent thyme, rounded out with oh-so-creamy sweet potatoes.
Other things to add to this savory puree –
- mix with cooked barley for a well-rounded baby dinner
- add broccoli puree for a balanced meal
- for a baby 3-course meal, start with green bean + parsley puree, then beef + sweet potato puree with thyme, followed with roasted blueberry + cinnamon puree for dessert.

Ingredients
- 8 ounce sirloin beef, cubed
- 2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped
- 2 cups beef broth, low or no sodium recommended
- 1 tbsp fresh thyme, chopped
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, bring the beef, sweet potatoes, thyme and broth to a boil over medium heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes, checking to see if beef is cooked through and sweet potatoes are tender. If not, simmer for an additional 10-15 minutes. Let cool slightly.
- Transfer all ingredients into a blender or food processor and puree, adding extra broth in 1/4 cup increments if needed, until you reach your desired consistency.

I made this baby food for the first time, and my 7 month old loved it from the first taste! We didn’t have thyme, so we used half a tsp of dried oregano 🙂 Thanks so much for this recipe, I’m looking forward to trying the others!
When my youngest was that age, she was obsessed with this puree, too! Looking forward to hearing back as you try other purees. Thank you, Sam! xo, Michele
Could you please adapt some of your recipes for an instant pot or pressure cooker? Either way I’m looking forward to making this and some of your other recipes for my 8 month old. Thank you!
Hi Caitlin! You can use this post as a guide to making baby food in your Instant Pot: https://babyfoode.com/blog/instant-pot-baby-food/ xo, Michele
First baby food I’ve made and it was a huge hit!! Can’t wait to make more of your recipes
Hi Kathleen! Thanks so much sharing your experience. Happy you are here! xo, Michele
My baby devoured this! I used rosemary instead of thyme and kept the puree pretty thick because he’s 9 months old. Thank you so much for your amazing recipes!!!
The beef broth that I looked at , at H‑E‑B had honey as an ingredient and babies shouldn’t have honey until after a year old. Be careful which beef broth you buy & be sure to check the ingredients if baby is under 1 !
It might sound weird, but can you use chicken stock? Thanks!
You sure can! xo, Michele
This recipe turned out perfect. Unlike others that have prepared it, I cook for my elderly father who has to have foods puréed. He’s picky (extremely picky)so I was a bit skeptical. He loved it. Thank you for a successful dinner entree!!!
I love that your father is loving this meal.
Is it possible that the meat and potatoes cook in half the time the recipe says? Maybe my stove is off but the meat seemed to be over done and might have been cooked by 10 minutes in. Is it ok to take it off the stove that early?
Sorry, this happened. Yes, this could happen and it’s probably due to the size you cut your beef. If you make this next time, just take the beef out when it’s done. I’ll update the recipe card.
I was really skeptical after tasting this (pureed meat was really the thing I questioned), but man baby loved it! I recently swirled in some peanut butter with this to make it even heartier. Worked well! 🙂
I know right?! Pureed meat is kinda a weird concept but it’s usually a hit with babies! Glad to hear yours enjoyed it!
This is a great recipe! Thank you! Also while cooking should I be covering the pot with the lid at any point?
So glad you enjoyed this recipe. No, for this recipe you leave the lid off.
Thanks to u guys
My daughter LOVES this! So does my husband, my mom, my grandparents… Haha. I am going to make it again but am having a hard time finding fresh Thyme. Would I be able to use ground thyme? If so how much? Thanks for making the transition to solids so fun!

Hi. I was wondering if you could use vegetable stock vs beef stock with this recipe and what impact that would make? Thank you
Yes, you can totally use vegetable stock with this recipe, it just won’t have as much deep beefy flavor as using beef stock.

When you say "cubed" for your meat recipes, how big are your cubes? I tried the chicken recipe and my chicken was way overdone but the flavor was great. So I’m guessing my cubes were smaller than yours. Given that beef is more expensive, I don’t want to mess this up! I’m new to puréed foods, my daughter is just now 6 months old and I’ve chosen to wait but I’m so excited to try your recipes!
Sorry for the delay, and bummer about your chicken! My cubes are generally around 1 to 1 1/2 inch cubes depending on how thick the chicken or meat is. You can always do smaller cubes just know you need to check on the meat more often. Hope that helps!
Let me know how your little one likes the purees.

Hi Michele, I only have lean ground beef..can i use that for this round instead of the sirloin?
I haven’t tried this recipe with ground beef yet. I have made ground beef into baby puree and it worked great. I would brown the ground beef first, then add the stock and sweet potatoes and simmer until the sweet potatoes are cooked. Or brown the meat and then cook the sweet potatoes separate and then puree together.
Let me know if it works.

what kind of beef broth do u use, just the regular one? my baby is 8 months
I usually use the organic store bought broth and try to get low sodium variety (or I have my mom make me some:). I just posted a chicken stock recipe so check that out for your chicken recipes.

Hi can I cook beef in pressure cooker instead of boiling it for my 12 month old ?
I have not tried this method, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. If you try it, let us know how it turns out. Thanks!
Okay. What magic do you posess?!? Just kidding, but seriously my 1 year old likes this! I have NEVER been able to get him to eat a baby food with beef, homemade or store bought. I was totally skeptical but he’s liked the other recipes I’ve tried. And he ate it. I still can’t believe it. You are my hero.
It’s my superhero power! Making babies eat!! lol!!
So glad he liked it! I can still smell how good this one smelled!!
